Tigger Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Twice now I have noticed when going to start up first thing, my front window sitch for clearing frost ect has come on. I have not switched it and it has only been on cold mornings. Have they put an Auto switch in. I can't see anything about it in the book? Quote
Taliska Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Hi, If you put the heating controller to point to the screen, it will switch the front demister on for you. Leastwise it does on my Galaxy! Taliska Quote
Tigger Posted November 27, 2003 Author Report Posted November 27, 2003 This was before I put the CC on De Mist! it was lit up when starting! Quote
asimons Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 I too have seen the heated screen come on "automatically" on a cold morning, without turning the CC to "screen". It does seem to have a mind of its own - but as long as it's intelligent why not? I encountered another "undocumented feature" the other evening when we had had (or were having) heavy rain. The wipers were on intermittent (a middle frequency setting), and were wiping every few seconds as I sat in the queues in town. Then, when the rain got heavier, they ran continuously for a while, then back to intermittent. The pattern continued as I drove at higher speeds home. It behaved like the automatic wipers on my wife's Peugeot, but I didn't know the Galaxy had them (though SA Intruder implies his Alhambra does). Next morning, in similarly showery weather, the wipers remained doggedly intermittent, whatever the rainfall. There's nothing I can see in the manual or on Ford's web site that describes this capability. So I'm baffled! (Not that I mind having an "intelligent" car, but I would like to know how/when it works. Thereagain, the operation of the auxiliary heater on the TDI is well documented in this forum, but I'm not convinced the actual behaviour reflects these rules!) Any more examples of "covert intelligence"?? Aid Quote

I thought it was just me :D Saturday on the motorway, the wipers were quite fast while switched to intermittent. Sunday they went to the normal interval setting Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 My front screen heater switched itself on this morning - temp display said +2 degC, climate control on normal auto and I didn't touch any of its buttons when I got in, no frost on car as it is parked under a carport! I switched it off straight away and the screen did not mist up or frost up as I drove off.Obviously there is some sort of auto-activation built into the front screen heater, but quite what, I dread to think. Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 It works off outside air temp, coolant temp. Nothing sensed on the screen to activate. Quote
Fordy Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 With regard to the windscreen wiper speeds etc, my new Galaxy has speed sensitive wipers and is documented in the new handbook given with the car. If when you are driving you turn the wipers on to continuous, then come to a standstill, the wipers drop into intermittent mode, then return to continuous mode as you drive off again. If you are in intermittent mode whilst driving then when you stop they will drop to an intermittent speed one step lower than set and return to the as set intermittent speed when you start to move again. You can overide this by moving the switch lever when at rest, but resets itself again when you move off. The setting with the car moving seems to be the controlling point. Regards Fordy :D Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 The wipers on my 1998 Scenic do this, those on my 2001 Galaxy don't. Nice to see that Ford is catching up - only 5 years behind the times. On the latest Galaxy/Alhambra, does the rear wiper also come on automatically when reverse gear is engaged and the front wipers are on? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Yes, although I would describe the rear wiper/washer as less than gratifying, performance wise. I would also describe the rain-sensor operation on the front wipers as less than predictable. It seems to have "wrong kind of rain" syndrome, now and again. Daddy, shouldn't the wipers be working? - Yes, they should. - What's sensitivity? - Something this car has forgotten - Daddy, what does freakin German cack mean? Like the front windows "auto/not auto" unpredicatablity. And the CC with its "what's it doing now?" operability. (Has anyone ever really sussed this out?). Wierd science, I think they call it. All great ideas for future improvement! Quote
Tigger Posted November 30, 2003 Author Report Posted November 30, 2003 Can you also believe what it tells you. I have been trying to find this air going to the front window. I can have it on demist and also econ but do I believe the book as it says demist puts the aircon on? :D Another one is you can turn the Aux heater to off in the morning, yet it still winds down like a jet engine when you have stopped? which to me means its still on! :D Still drives well and I could drive it for miles everytimr I start up! :D Quote
Tigger Posted November 30, 2003 Author Report Posted November 30, 2003 :D Thanks for that got the wrong idea as to what it was, it does explain the smell :D The next question is does the computer use this information about fuel when giving MPG? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted November 30, 2003 Report Posted November 30, 2003 No, it only measures and calculates engine fuel usage. Quote
Taliska Posted November 30, 2003 Report Posted November 30, 2003 Funny you should ask that question about the mpg Tigger - I was wondering that myself and guessed that the aux heater consumption was unlikely to be taken into account on the computer. Went to fill up a bit earlier than normal today - had done 540 miles and had used 66 litres (ouch) - so that's only 4 litres left (supposedly). This time I'd only done about 60 or so miles with the fuel light on (have done 100 before now). It had been cold the last few days so the aux heater has been on a bit. Hummm... Taliska P.S. anyone fancy coming and washing mine - it's covered in mud! It's started raining again, so with any luck it will be a bit cleaner by the morning! :D Quote
william Posted November 30, 2003 Report Posted November 30, 2003 The Aux heater uses about 0.6 l/Hr of fuel when running a full heat (5kw)!! Thats about 1 gallon every 7.5 hours running. But the heater is only running for about 20 minutes until the coolant is up to temperature. Quote
Taliska Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 The aux heater... @ 0.6 l/Hr that's not a huge amount of fuel each time it works - so not too much to worry about really in the mpg calcs. Had a bit of fun playing with the wipers in the rain seeing how they slowed down when I stopped - gosh this car's so exciting - so far there's been something new to discover every week with this beast! B) On that note - I wish I knew how the Climate Controlled heating thingy worked - I've read the manual but am no wiser. B) Taliska Quote
Taliska Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 It happened to me this morning too... the front demister came on by itself when I started it - the temp was indicating 2.5 degrees. This proves that cars are female - takes ages to work them out, even then you're not quite sure you've sussed them out completely. I wonder what I'm to discover next week with the car! By the way she's called Molly - that car that is! Taliska Quote
Tigger Posted December 9, 2003 Author Report Posted December 9, 2003 Just hope you don't have to put a light bulb in then you will know how female it is?   The fan speed on the CC has a mind of its own! Quote
Taliska Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 The fan speed on the CC has a mind of its own! Dead right it has! Oh. the front demister came on again automatically tonight at 1.5 degrees! What fun! Taliska Quote
